Q: Who can give birth at a birth center?

Clients must be low risk to deliver out of the hospital. Unfortunately, if you are on blood pressure medications, insulin for diabetes, daily asthma medication, are pregnant with twins, or have had uterine surgeries, it risks you out of delivering at the birth center due to increased risks for complications.

Q: What pain relief options are available at the birth center?

Pain relief options include aromatherapy, massage, aquatherapy in shower or birth tubs, as well as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Nitrous oxide has been used in Europe for childbirth for years. It is safe for both mother and baby and can be used in the birth tubs too!

What’s the difference between giving birth at a birth center and in a hospital?

There are a few key differences between delivering at the birth center and a hospital. First, we have all the same emergency equipment and medication as they do in the hospital and we bring them into the birth room when delivery is near.

At the Center, we try to encourage physiologic birth by encouraging eating and drinking throughout labor, walking around the Center and even outside, ans allowing whomeveryou want in the room to support you.

We follow national standards for intermittant auscultation with a fetal doppler to assess the baby’s heart rate instead of using stapped on monitors that limit your mobility and are uncomfortble.

After the birth we offer the same assessment of the baby and newborn medications but we do it on the bed next to you and with your permission.

Lastly, there are no over night stays after the birth. Most discharge in four to six hours and come back to the Center for a 48 hour check up.

What happens if I need to be transferred to a hospital?

We have a smooth and seamless transfer protocol to get you to the nearest hospital, Advent Altamonte. The Midwife will call in advance and give report to the on call obstetrician as well as fax records. In most cases, the midwife will accompany you to the hospital to give a face to face handoff the the nurses and OB. After delivery we pick up where we left off and continue to support you through breastfeeding, newborn care, and self care for optimal outcomes.
