The Best Midwife Model of Care for Low-Risk Pregnancy
Midwifery care for a low-risk pregnancy: If you have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, midwifery care treats birth as a normal body process, not a medical problem. Here at Tree of Life Birth Center, our midwives offer longer prenatal visits, provide evidence-based information about your health, and watch closely for signs you need more care. A 2024 Cochrane review found that midwife-led care led to fewer cesareans and better birth experiences.
Pregnancy and birth are profound life experiences. For most healthy people with low-risk pregnancies, they are also normal physiological processes—not illnesses that automatically require medical management. With extensive education, we use shared-decision making and true informed consent for the care we provide.
At Tree of Life Birth & Gynecology, our midwives believe the best maternity-care model protects both truths: birth should be respected as a normal bodily process, and safety must remain at the center of every decision.
Our Central Florida midwifery practice brings Certified Nurse-Midwives and Florida Licensed Midwives together under one roof. This collaborative model combines advanced clinical knowledge, traditional midwifery wisdom, relationship-centered care, and thoughtful medical collaboration when needed.
What is the Midwifery Model of Care?
The midwifery model begins with trust: trust in the body, trust in the birth process, and trust in the pregnant person’s ability to make informed decisions.
Rather than asking, “How should we manage this pregnancy?”, our midwives often begin by asking:
- Is this pregnancy progressing normally?
- What does this mother need to feel safe, informed, and supported?
- Can we allow the body more time without compromising safety?
- Is an intervention truly necessary?
- How can we protect this family’s preferences while continuing to assess risk?
Midwifery care is built on partnership. As hour midwives, we are not simply directing your care from across the room. We are listening, educating, observing, and making decisions with you.
The philosophy of midwifery recognizes the importance of dignity, bodily autonomy, individualized care, and the pregnant person’s role as the primary decision-maker. This relationship-centered approach is consistent with the international philosophy of midwifery care and the professional values of the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
How is the Obstetrical Model Different from Midwifery Care?
The obstetrical model is essential when pregnancy or birth becomes complicated. Obstetricians are specialists trained to diagnose and treat pregnancy-related disease, perform surgery, and respond to serious complications and emergencies. We refer families to obstetric care when there are complications in their pregnancy that go outside of a low-risk care model.
However, because the obstetrical model developed within a medical and hospital system, it may approach pregnancy through the lens of risk, pathology, monitoring, and intervention—even when the pregnancy remains low-risk.
In a conventional obstetrical setting, care may include:
- Shorter prenatal appointments
- Routine testing or procedures based on hospital protocols
- Greater reliance on technology and continuous monitoring
- Less flexibility around movement, eating, birth positions, or environment
- Earlier use of induction, medication, or other interventions
- A provider who may not remain continuously present during labor
This does not mean that all obstetrical care is overly medicalized or that intervention is always unnecessary. Medical and surgical interventions can be lifesaving. The difference lies primarily in the starting point.
The obstetrical model is designed to identify and treat complications. The midwifery model is designed to protect normal physiology while remaining alert for complications.
For healthy people with low-risk pregnancies, beginning with the least invasive appropriate care can create more space for normal birth.
What Midwifery-Led Care Looks Like at Tree of Life
At Tree of Life, we want you to feel known—not like another name on a schedule or a set of numbers on a chart. We take time to learn about you, your growing family, your hopes for birth, and any fears or concerns you may carry. Your appointments include comprehensive prenatal assessments and appropriate screenings, but they also leave room for conversation, education, laughter, reassurance, and shared decision-making.
Throughout pregnancy, we support the whole person. We talk about nutrition, movement, emotional well-being, relationships, and the practical realities of preparing for a new baby. We help you prepare not only for labor and birth, but also for breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and caring for your newborn. Your cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, family structure, and personal preferences are respected as meaningful parts of your care.
Midwifery care constantly assess the pregnant client for risk factors and/or complications that may arise during pregnancy. Each appointment we screen urine and blood pressure, ask questions about your symptoms to rule out complications, and assess fetal well-being with hands on assessment of growth, position, and fetal heart rate. We provide complete medical care with the Midwifery Model.
During labor, we do not expect you to remain still, quiet, or confined to a bed. We encourage you to listen to your body—to walk, move, rest, eat, change positions, use water, and find your own rhythm. Our midwives offer hands-on support and nonmedication comfort options, herbs and homeopathy, and water labor or water birth may be available for appropriate candidates.
While our approach is gentle and supportive, it is never casual about safety. We continually assess the well-being of both you and your baby throughout labor, birth, and the postpartum period. Tree of Life follows national standards followed by hospitals and birth centers alike. Tree of Life has been Nationally Accredited by CABC for over 7 years and takes great pride in being the only accredited facility in Central Florida. If concerns arise, we communicate openly and create a clear plan for consultation or hospital transfer when a higher level of care is needed. At Tree of Life, transfer is never viewed as failure. It is part of honoring our commitment to safe, responsible, family-centered care.
From your first prenatal visit through the tender early days with your newborn, our goal is for you to feel informed, respected, protected, and never alone.
We do not believe that safety and autonomy are opposing values. Respecting birth does not mean ignoring risk. It means avoiding unnecessary interference while carefully watching for signs that the plan should change.
Does Midwifery Care Mean “No Intervention”?
No. Midwifery care does not mean refusing testing, medication, consultation, or hospital care.
It means using intervention thoughtfully.
Our midwives continuously evaluate maternal and fetal well-being. If a pregnancy develops risk factors that require additional evaluation or a higher level of care, we discuss those findings honestly and develop the safest plan with the family. The Birth Center has the same emergency medications as the hospital. There is no “extra risk” because you are at a birth center. Our team practices emergency drills quarterly and has a great working relationship with the transfer hospital to ensure timely transfer when needed in a smooth and safe manner.
When consultation or transfer becomes necessary, it is not a failure. It is the midwifery model working as it should.
A safe midwife knows how to support normal birth—and how to recognize when birth is no longer following a normal course.
What Does the Evidence Say?
Research supports the value of midwife-led continuity of care. A 2024 Cochrane review found that people receiving this model were less likely to experience cesarean or instrumental birth and generally reported more positive experiences during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. The review also identified potential cost savings, while noting uncertainty around some outcomes. Read the Cochrane evidence summary.
In 2025, the World Health Organization called for the expansion of midwifery models of care, including continuity models in which families are supported by a known midwife or small team. Read the WHO announcement.
Evidence does not suggest that every person should give birth in the same place or follow the same plan. It supports matching each person with the appropriate provider and birth setting based on health history, current risk factors, preferences, and access to consultation or transfer.
Who is a Good Candidate for Midwifery Care?
Midwifery-led birth-center or home-birth care may be appropriate for people who:
- Have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy
- Desire an unmedicated or minimally intervened birth
- Want greater involvement in decision-making
- Value longer appointments and personalized education
- Prefer an intimate, family-centered environment
- Understand that risk status can change
- Are willing to transfer to the hospital if a higher level of care becomes necessary

Choosing the Best Model for Your Birth
The best maternity-care model is not simply the one with the most technology or the fewest interventions. It is the model that offers the appropriate level of care, respects your values, monitors safety carefully, and responds wisely when circumstances change.
For many healthy people with low-risk pregnancies, midwifery-led care provides that balance.
At Tree of Life Birth & Gynecology, we support birth without trying to control it. We educate rather than pressure. We listen before we intervene. We protect normal physiology while remaining prepared for the unexpected.
With Certified Nurse-Midwives and Florida Licensed Midwives working under one roof, families receive the strength of two midwifery traditions united by one philosophy:
Birth is a normal bodily function to be supported—not a medical event to be routinely managed or controlled.
